Trip

Basic Snowshoe - Commonwealth Basin

A moderate Basic Snowshoe in a lovely treed valley and basin on the north-side of Snoqualmie Pass. Expect creekside and meadow views, a few easier creek crossings, some mountain views in the open areas and a waterfall. This should be a good work-out as well, up to 4.5 miles RT and 1200' gain. Participants need to have a Basic Snowshoe Badge or equivalent and have sufficient conditioning for the trip gain and length.

Meet at 9 AM in front of the Laconia Market and Cafe at Snoqualmie Pass--see detailed instructions below.

The Market is the first left as as you exit I-90 at the first Snoqualmie Pass exit (Exit 52).  In other words coming East on I-90, at Exit 52 turn right, then you will see the Snoqualmie West Ski Area uphill on the right.  The market in on the opposite/freeway side of the road from the ski lodge.  DO NOT PARK in the Market parking lot--this is for the business, but rather along the road shoulder.  If all the roadside parking is full closer to the Market you will need to park further east along the road, possible as far down as the Chervon gas station.  No parking pass is required.    We will meet in  front of the Market parking lot (west side) and walk as a group along the road and under the freeway  to our starting point at the PCT North TH.  The PCT North has a summer parking lot at the TH, but it is unplowed and blocked in the winter and no parking is allowed on the road near it or under the freeway.

This is a straight-forward snowshoe in a lovely valley with easy access off I-90.  Participants should have either participated in a previous snowshoe trip prior to this one or participated in another outdoor activity (day hike, trail run, etc.) this past fall to ensure they are in current condition for this trip.  Here is our approximate planned route.  It may vary with conditions found in field, avalanche conditions on the day of the trip and participants' interests.
