Hoh River

Trip

Backpack - Hoh River

Hike the Hoh to Blue Glacier. I have permits for Lewis Meadows Group Camp and Elk Lake Group Camp! We will base camp at Elk Lake to hike to Blue Glacier.

  • Moderate/Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 37.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,700 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 4,300 ft
  • Pace: 2 mph

Meet at The Hoh River Trailhead on Friday September 22nd at 10:15am. We will aim to leave by 10:30. I will likely try to get a first come first serve camp at Kalaloch late Thursday night.

To get to the Hoh River Trailhead from Forks, head south on U.S. Highway 101 for about 13 miles. Turn east onto Upper Hoh Road and continue about 18.2 miles to the road end where the ranger station and trailhead are located.

*Leaders Permission Required*. I will be looking for participants who have had or will have backpacking experience with trips 10+ miles and can maintain a 2 mph pace. I will also be looking for participants who are committed to the trip if accepted as this trip requires me adding your name to the permit and getting reimbursed for permit cost ($16 for two nights). It is important to me to have participants who enjoy hiking in a group and have patience for others on the trip.

** NOTE ** Sign up will be first-come-first-serve, you're welcome to request permission in advance but you will have to register when registration opens.  There won't be any advance registration.

We will hike at a moderate 2 mph pace, taking frequent breaks. We will stop for an extended lunch (~20 minutes). We will hike 10.3 miles to Lewis Meadows on Friday aiming to reach camp by 5pm; 4.5 miles Saturday to base camp at Elk Lake before continuing 3.7 miles to Elk Meadows and 3.7 miles back to Elk Lake making Saturday a 11.9 mile day. Sunday we will leave early, around 7:30am and hike 14.8 miles back to the trailhead, aiming to be back by 4:30pm.

There should be bear wires at both camps. Please note that there is a rope ladder and washout to navigate before glacier meadows toward the end of this trip.
