Alpine Scramble - Wonderland Trail: Mowich Lake to Westside Road

Magnificent meadows and stunning views of Rainier’s NW aspect. Besides chowing down on ginormous blueberries, this scramble for COVID vaccinated folks will ramble ‘The Colonades’ ridge crest to ~7000’. Please see Leader’s Notes for additional information regarding signup.

  • Strenuous/Very Strenuous, Strenuous 5, Technical 1
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 35.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 7,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,718 ft

Arranged via email.

[Due to the South Mowich bridge being still out (with mid-thigh water height), this trip will be starting from Dry Falls on the West Side Road with substantially more distance and elevation gain]

A gorgeous overnight trip to the meadows of Sunset Park/The Colonades that begins and ends at Mowich Lake.  A long way in (and out), yet the blueberries and views will make it all worth while.

This is an unusual trip in that its most challenging day will be on the way out (the 2nd day).  This is due to extra distance/elevation gain on Sunday morning spent ascending The Colonades to finally reach our highest elevation of ~7000’.  The hardest part of Sunday will be our return to the cars in the afternoon, with warm afternoon temperatures accompanying us on our ascent from the North Mowich River crossing to Mowich Lake (with overnight packs).   The overall statistics are Day One: 10 miles/~3000’ gain, Day Two: 12 miles/~4400’ gain.

Due to these challenges and a signup far in advance of the actual trip (necessitated by the permit popularity), attendees will be expected to maintain their conditioning in the weeks leading up to this trip by engaging in similar outings (can be either private or with the club).   If, in the eyes of the leader it appears attendees have been unable to maintain their conditioning, they agree to be canceled from the trip.
