Alpine Scramble - Mount Ruth & Steamboat Prow

Come scramble up Mt Ruth and to Steamboat Prow and look down on the Rainier climbers.

  • Technical 3, Strenuous 4
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 10.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,500 ft

Meet at the South Renton Park and Ride at 5:30 AM. Meet at the south end of the lot right across Grady Way from the Mac Donald’s.

Mt Ruth is known as having the best glissade of any scramble in the Cascades.  (About 2500') With this year's big snowfall, this will be the best day of the year to enjoy it.  Sunshine guaranteed or double your money back.

From the summit of Mt Ruth, we will continue up the ridge to Steamboat Prow for a total gain of about 5400'.

In the photo shown above, Mt Ruth is the ridge on the very far left, Steamboat is the point at the top of the triangular shaped farily smooth "Inner Glacier".  Right behind Steamboat in the photo is Camp Sherman where people summitting Rainier from the Emmons Glacier camp out.  I took this photo last September from near Burroughs #3.  Note the small crevasses on the Inner Glacier and the huge crevasses on the Emmons and Whitman glaciers

From Steamboat, we will descend back along the ridge to Mt Ruth and then slide down several thousand feet back to Glacier Basin.

This trip is an S5-T3.  It is not very technically difficult, but it is a long hike to a very high elevation.  To come on this trip, you must be in very good shape.  This is a good choice for people training for a Rainier climb in July and who have been doing lots of hiking.

In the unlikely event of nasty weather, the trip will be changed to one of the easier to reach lower elevation sub-peaks at Mount Rainier.
