Goat Island Mountain

Alpine Scramble - Goat Island Mountain

We will do a loop on Goat Island Mountain if conditions are good. After reaching the summit from the east, we will continue along the ridge to a saddle, then return in a CCW direction following the creek and trails. This is a mentored lead for Shirley Rogers.

  • Technical 3, Strenuous 3
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 10.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,500 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 7,288 ft
  • Pace: 500-1000 ft/hr on steep portions, ~1.5 mph overall

Meet at Fryingpan Creek Trailhead ready to hike at 8 a.m.     Arrive by 7:45 a.m.

Carpooling is optional and possible meeting places and times will be included in pre-trip email.

A parking pass is required for each car:   America the Beautiful, Annual Pass, or $30 daily entrance fee.

If conditions are good this is an excellent scramble, with steep ups and downs, some routefinding, some exposure, great views, a ridge walk, and a glacial stream crossing, totalling 10 mi and 3500 ft gain&loss.

Participants need to be in good condition for the trip, have done recent scrambles, and are confident and efficient on varied terrain including snow.    We will stay fairly close together as a group.  There will be a braided glacial stream crossing (or two) on the way down which we will walk or rock hop in our boots.

Experienced scramblers and students may sign up (students must have already done a snow scramble  and must have successfully completed rock and snow field trips).

At the trailhead we will do intros and review the planned route, goals and expectations.

Expect a steady moderate pace with about one 10- min break per hour for clothing, party separations, and/or food/hydration, etc.   In addition we will pause occasionally to study terrain, map&compass, &GPS to stay on the best /safest route.   Lunch break will be 15-30 min depending on conditions.

The route or destination may be changed if the forecast or actual conditions are unfavorable.
