Moss Workshop - Seattle - 2024

Naturalist Course

Moss Workshop

We will learn about moss identification using visual keys for common mosses in our area.

When we hike Northwest lowland forests we can't miss the beautiful mosses, liverworts, and lichens that highlight those forests and river valleys especially during the wet winter months. In this workshop you will learn how to identify up to 35 common mosses, several liverworts, and 10 or more lichens using a visual key course book provided to students.

The workshop includes an introductory evening online lecture and a half day field trip locally.   Please select and note the start time of your field trip - listed in order as either 9:00 or 10:00 am, or 1:30 pm. To meet COVID-19 protocols, field trips will be delivered in small groups of no more than 3 to 4 students and up to 2 instructors. Students should bring masks to the field and may wear one if they so choose. Even in those small groups of 2 to 4 students we must come closely to identify subject mosses, liverworts, and lichens.

Because it is nearly impossible to look at mosses, etc. on a day with heavy rain, we ask that you also select from the choices a back-up date which will be on Sunday of the same weekend.

The waterproof course book students receive at the field trip is printed in close to true colors on 10 mil material.  Students will find the book to be of great value during this course; and in the future, as students further their interest in mosses, liverworts, and lichens. The book's printing cost represents more than one-half the cost of the course. Students will receive an online form of the book before the course begins.

Required Equipment

A magnifying loupe of at least 20-30 power is suggested. A lighted loupe works best in darker forest settings. Look for a loupe with a reasonably broad lens.

The leaders frequently use a camera with a macro lens in identification. Images of mosses and lichens have lasting value in committing to memory greatly varied Bryophytes and Lichens.
