Winter Scramble - South Bessemer Mountain

Very pleasant trip on moderate terrain.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Entire route is on logging roads.  Very pleasant when snow covered, less so when not.  Trail head is at 900'.  We encountered snow at 3200'.  It was deep enough to make snowshoes worthwhile after 4000'.  Carried, but did not use, ice axes.  Used poles, snow shoes, gaiters.

This was our backup destination which we used when the avalanche forecast called for 'Considerable' danger for our original destination.  Very pleasant day with high clouds and no rain. Dramatic sky and great views of the Middle Fork area.  Encountered snow at 3200' and used snow shoes from 4000' to summit at 5028'.  12 miles round trip.  7.5 hours.
