Winter Scramble - Mount Baldy

Great trip with fantastic formations of ice-encrusted trees.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Only the first 100 yards or so of the Kachess Dam Road are plowed, in order to provide parking spaces. After that, the rest of the road is packed by snow mobiles.

We had a wonderful time. We left the cars at 8:00. Except for the first 3/4 mile that was packed by the snowmobiles, we had to break trail the whole way. We made it to the top of point 4942 (which we learned is named Para Point for the Para Creek that drains it) at 2:00. The point and the surrounding ridge were covered with gorgeous ice-encrusted trees. It was spectacular. We were worried that we wouldn't have time to reach Baldy, so we decided to just head SE along the ridge until a turn-around time of 2:30.  We were back at the cars at 5:00.
