Winter Scramble - Mailbox Peak (winter)

An unexpectedly sunny day and pleasant company made this a five star conditioning trip.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Snow on upper slopes. Trail well packed so no snowshoes needed.  Half the party used microspikes on descent.  Watch out for tree bombs caused by the sun melting snow on the branches above!

We hiked up the old steep trail and down the longer new trail.  There was a foot of so of fresh snow on the upper slopes. That, and the moody sky, provided lovely views.  The trail was well packed and only a little slick.  Half the party used microspikes on the way down.  One party member was nailed by a huge snow bomb while standing under a tree.  Otherwise the day was uneventful.
