Trip Report

Winter Scramble - Aurora Peak (winter)

Gorgeous views of pristine North Fork Soleduc valley and Mount Olympus beckoning beyond on this 9 mile and 5000’ elevation gain trip.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Encountered snow at ~1500’, becoming continuous at ~2000’. Snow was surprisingly consolidated throughout the entire route, with heather showing through some thin spots near the summit. Only used snowshoes, although crampons and micro-spikes were carried due to radically varying conditions on past trips. In spite of sunny/clear skies, we had constant tree drip (due to melting snow), for a surprisingly wet day when under the trees.

Gorgeous views of pristine North Fork Soleduc valley and Mount Olympus beckoning beyond on this 9 mile and 5000’ elevation gain trip. We had quite a pleasant break near the summit basking in rare winter sunshine. Total time was 7.5 hours, with 4.5 hours up, half an hour near the summit, and 2.5 hours down. Photos from this and other trips to this venue can be seen here.
