Trip Report

Winter Scramble - Aurora Peak (winter)

Gorgeous views of pristine North Fork Soleduc valley and Mount Olympus beckoning beyond on this 9 mile and 5000’ elevation gain trip.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Encountered snow at ~1500’, becoming continuous at ~2000’. Snow was surprisingly consolidated throughout the entire route, with heather showing through some thin spots near the summit. Only used snowshoes, although crampons and micro-spikes were carried due to radically varying conditions on past trips. In spite of sunny/clear skies, we had constant tree drip (due to melting snow), for a surprisingly wet day when under the trees.

Gorgeous views of pristine North Fork Soleduc valley and Mount Olympus beckoning beyond on this 9 mile and 5000’ elevation gain trip. We had quite a pleasant break near the summit basking in rare winter sunshine. Total time was 7.5 hours, with 4.5 hours up, half an hour near the summit, and 2.5 hours down.
