Trip Report

Unicorn Peak/South Side

We started from the trailhead about 8:30am. the trail to the lake was in good shape but beyond that it was scree and boulder hopping "heck" pretty much to the summit. We used crampons for 200' on the snow slope at the top of the 2nd gully going up but plunge stepped going down that afternoon. to avoid the now 40-50' class 3/4 wall we descended to the right from the top of the 2nd gully and traversed 400-500 yards east under the cliff bands to the next gully to obtain the summit ridge. it was unpleasant scree as well. round trip was just over 8 hours. Definitely NOT one to do when the snow has melted out. Universally the group agreed it was very unpleasant cross country travel.
