Trip Report

Third Burroughs Traverse

A last chance to visit Burroughs Mountain (3rd, 2nd, 1st) with a greatly reduced volume of other parties (Sunrise road closure, winterish white-out conditions). A great loop (13 miles, 4000’) which included White River Campground, the trail to Glacier Basin, Burroughs, and Shadow Lake.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
    • Freezing temperatures at the White River Campground, and in the teens on the summit of 3rd Burroughs, with a ~10 mph wind for some extra chill.  We brought micro-spikes and snowshoes as sometimes the drifts can be deep, but only the micro-spikes were used.  Needless to say several puffy layers were mandatory.
    • A just in time opening of forest fire damaged Highway 410 (albeit with a 15 minute gravel detour) allowed us to take advantage of this last weekend of access to the White River Campground.

We were treated to a very brief glimpse of Observation Rock and Liberty Cap from the summit of 3rd Burroughs, but the remainder of the day was a total white out:
