Trip Report

Skagit River: Goodell Creek to Copper Creek

3500 CFS. Average moving time 4.8 mph. 2 hours moving time. 2 1/2 hours from put in to take out. A wide and scenic reach, characterized by class II rapids and many islands to navigate around. The S-Bends, class III drops, were the most exciting and challenging but straightforward at this level.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Very nice put in at Goodell and nice take out at Copper Creek. Bathroom at Copper Creek. Both have room for 1/2 dozen vehicles. Nice views of the snowcapped Cascade Mountains in the background.

S-Bends are 3 distinct drops within 1/4 mile distance. There is room to eddy out on the left prior to the first drop, and in between the 1st and 2nd, and in between the 2nd and 3rd, at this flow. 1st and 3rd drops were pretty straightforward, lining up on the tongue on the green water and riding the wave trains. There were cheat lines either side. The wave train at the middle drop was more formidable. Two waves approaching haystacks could be tough at higher flows.
