Trip Report

Sea Kayak - Hammersley Inlet

Opted for only half of the Shelton shuttle, but had a great day just the same.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The weather forecast called for 20kts + wind gust to start around 3:00 p.m.  Instead of paddling up and back down, the group opted for a car shuttle to Walker Park.  This gave us a little extra time to explore Pirates Cove and Mill Creek.  We were able to travel well into Mill Creek, past the road bridge and then some.

The launch/landing point at Walker Park is challenging at high tide.  The path goes to a rock pile and there was no beach.

No other boat traffic, eddies were mild on the flood, and calm weather with just a little rain.  No significant wildlife, but lots of great conversation and a very relaxing day on the water.

Just a note: If the wind was from the SW it tends to blow down Hammersley from Shelton to Arcadia; thus a return with a blowing tailwind might be fun, depending on your carnage tolerance. You probably made a prudent choice. Good to know the high tide eliminates the beach at Walker County Park. Dan Halsey.
