Pre-Trip Skills Practice - Hobuck Beach

We practiced paddling in surf, sailing, rescues with sail, paddling along coast in swell, group communication, stove operation and safety, tarp set up, bear safety, bear hang, and such.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

This was a pre-trip skills practice for upcoming paddle Quatsino to Tofino.  The trip is 3 weeks long and both strenuous and requiring skills.  We came out to the coast to practice use of group systems so that we will be able to work together efficiently and practice paddling in dynamic conditions to keep our skills sharp.

Thursday:  Paddle in small surf at Twin (Rivers).  Set up camp.  Rig sail on one kayak.  Review maps of the trip.

Friday:  Stove safety and operation.  Choose kitchen supplies.  Paddle in 20+kt winds in Neah bay.  Practice sailing and rescues with sails and in winds.

Saturday:  Review set up of Bug tent/tarp, bear safety, bear hang, chairs.  Paddle Neah bay to Flattery and back in 5-6ft swell.

Sunday:  Paddle surf at Hobuck (video!), take down camp, paddle surf at Twin.
