Overnight Field Trip (Tacoma Scrambles) - Bean Peak

As a result of the high avalanche warning issued for the weekend of the trip, the location was changed from Bean Basin to Beverly Campground. Students did not get to experience snow camping, but did have opportunities on Saturday and Sunday to attempt a snow scramble.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Camping in the trip location (Bean Basin) was avoided due to high avalanche danger; however,  teams of students were successful in reaching Bean Basin for a scramble of both Bean Peak.  Earle Peak was also attempted, but extensive cornice conditions on the route forced them to turn back.

Conditions in the Basin turned out to be fine, with little to know avalanche conditions noted.  Though the trip could have taken place as planned, the group leaders erred on the side of caution and avoided camping in Bean Basin.

Creek crossing was fine, but the water was a bit elevated due to snow melt.

Trail into the Basin is spotted with hard, icy snow patches, but generally easy to follow.
