6/6/15 trip Strong group had time for about an hour on summit and a swim in Lake of the Angels. Trip nearly snow free, though we used axes and poles for traction on hillside traverse towards summit. Even without snow, the traverse isn't bad for footing or loose rock. Heading towards summit, we traversed at about 5800' with some class 3 options. On way back we dropped about 200' lower to a series of benches starting above the 5400' tarn that made for faster going. Some loose rock heading up to left shoulder approaching summit block, but quite manageable. Once rounding shoulder to SW slope 50' below summit, easy ledges lead up into gulley which leads almost to summit and doesn't have bad rock. We saw no boot paths to suggest much recent scrambling, and found no summit register. Considering the opportunity for sustained scrambling, variable terrain options, and spectacular views, our group was left wondering why this trip isn't done more often. Habituated goats at the lake including two very young tiny kids. The old logging road 0.1 miles past the Putvin TH is at a right-sided road pullout, but is not marked or visible from the road without stopping. It makes a good descent option for tired feet and knees, as it is gradual easy walking.
