Trip Report

Mount Rose

I cancelled today's hike due to only one participant and me, but we did it as a private trip. It was a gorgeous day day up there!

  • Day Hiking
  • Successful
  • Road rough but passable
  • At least a dozen down trees on the trail below Horse Camp, easily passed. No snow until soon above Horse Camp on the left route and micro-spikes were needed due to slick/icy snow. The beaten path took us on the winter route. The dry stream crossing was sketchy with melting out snow 'bridges' - use caution. Steep snow through the burn area up to the summit was tracked but pretty slick on the descent; poles strongly recommended or even an ice axe could be useful. A blue bird day on Mt. Rose with a clear sky, no wind, and moderate temps. It was nice sharing this adventure with Jerrick Linde!

Slow down before the pavement ends - large holes right at the road transition especially, and along the unpaved stretch. But any vehicle can navigate it carefully.

We went up and down the 'steep' side from Horse Camp. Less than five hours round trip total from the trail head, including 45 minutes of stopped time. 5.5 miles rt, 3,470' gain.
