Trip Report

Mount Olympus/Blue Glacier

Trip July 4-7 (turned around)
Deaparted on 5:35 Kingston Ferry and found PA Ranger station opened at 8:30am (we were told 7:30.) Left Hoh TH around 11:30 and hiked to Lewis Creek (10 miles) - best camp sites to right of bear wires on the creek itself. Lots of mosquitos everywhere but on the river edge. Ran into Steve McKim's large party on the way to camp. Drizzly wet day but hopeful for sunny forecast Sat night and Sunday.
July 5 Departed 9:30am to Glacier Meadows. Camp sites were too small for our two large tents so we took up too. Passed many climbers who did not summit in whiteout the day before, although some made it right up to summit block.
July 6: ready to leave around 3:45 am in drizzle. Hiked to lateral moraine and found Steve McKim's group already roped on the glacier. Due to clouds and rain, they decided to turn around. We roped up and saw blue skies and clearing all the way up panic point and snow dome. Then white out conditions among cravasses by the ridge. We proceeded to 7000' and decided not to continue in white out. We knew summit block would be wet anyway. Fine lunch on rocks near panic peak.
Returned to camp around 3pm, slept and hiked out to Martin Creek Camp (3.3miles). Great camp ground with bear wires and camp fires allowed.
July 7: 15 mile hike back to the cars. Weather looked perfect.
