McCleary Cliffs

  • Climbing

Preliminary scouting indicated the Cliffs were dry enough to use, but needed quite a bit of pruning under Big Wall and some trail work and de-mossing. 4 volunteers managed 24 hours of work, cleared the base of Big Wall and some trail work, but de-mossing (esp at School Rock, Finger Tip Traverse and East Wall)) never got done. Suggest an unofficial 6 hours of Conservation work to students next year for prep. Saturday FT was misty, slippery on Fingertip traverse and School Rock(I closed down this climb about halfway throug day). Ran from 8:30 to nearly 7:15pm, with Big Wall rappels finished(carabiner brake & extended device), but some climbs undone and a significant backup on Open Book(2 extended device rappels-one with pack). Came back next day (9:30 to about 2pm) to finish up. put up Lay-Back(w redirect), Chimney, X-Rock Diagnol(w redirect) & Nose, School Rock(shut down early), 2 routes on East Wall(VERY mossy). Ran all groups through ledge below Open Book as a horizontal fixed line. Did all rappels using Extended Rappel technique. Most groups practiced Munter Belay on X-Rock Nose route. Not many groups practiced steep terrain travel.
