Lena Lake

After a rough winter and a long period of inaccessibility at Lena Lake, I wanted to scout out the roads and hike up to Lena Lake as I'm leading a hike there this coming week.

  • The trail is in great shape but there is lots of evidence of fallen trees and brush being cleared away in the last few weeks.  There is one fallen log to cross, and it is at the end of the final  switchback on the way up.  It's too large to step over, so I had to climb over - doing it as if I were getting on a horse.  Enjoyed seeing the new bridge just prior to the lake for the first time.  We saw some snow off trail, but didn't cross any snow on the trail.  We expected to go through more water in the usual areas, but the amount/depth of water on the trail was actually pretty low.

The drive from Olympia was fine - about 1.5 hours.  We arrived around 8:30 a.m. on a Friday and found three cars in the lot.  Bathrooms were relatively clean and stocked.  We only passed on hiker coming down as we were  heading up, and we had picnic rock to ourselves with exception of one hiker and dog passing through.  We passed many hikers and dogs as we were coming back down.  We started around 8:45 and got back to the car about 12:15 after a comfortable lunch break at the rock.  The lot was much more crowded with cars at this time.
