Trip Report

Le Petit Cheval/Spontaneity Arête

Great climb and just as fun as advertised.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • We parked at south side, west end of pull out MM 165, easily found trail down, had to go up river to find logs to cross so no water shoes needed.  Trail can be followed most of the way, staying climbers left of small snow field, found only two approach stretches roped.  Followed the route descriptions, saw numerous rappel stations on the way up, took 6 hours to summit.  Rappelled off actual summit if you go all the way - rappels seemed close together but makes sense because of cleaning and single rope used.  We rappelled into the gully just above the 2nd rappel station, might suggest going further down to the actual 2nd pitch belay station - although now there's a small rappel station in the gully from the higher 2nd rappel station.  Down climbing was fun!  Only saw one party on route beside us & great views of the Liberty/Spire area all day.

We camped overnight at the Cutthroat Trailhead in the parking lot (lots of others were there as well) and got started early (6am) in the morn.
