Lake Kachess & Box Canyon Creek

Good, fairly easy snowshoe backpack, with reasonable camping along the creek side of Box Canyon Rd at several points between four and five miles in. The best is probably the clearing five miles in, just before the single left arrow sign, before the bridge over Box Canyon Cr.

  • Short drive from I-90 exit 62, on paved road, to turn-around at Sno-Park. This Sno-Park is popular with snowmobilers, but the route is wide and it's easily shared. At about two miles, you can turn right onto Box Canyon Rd and avoid almost or all of the traffic. There are sanicans at the trailhead.

We hiked up the groomed, snowmobile road, but only saw two snowmobiles. We turned onto Box Canyon Road and were alone. The snow was very well compacted, so we were carrying our snowshoes all day. The weather started with a light drizzle and steadily increased all day. It was still 43° when we got to and set up our camp in a clearing next to the creek. We took a day trip up to the end of the road, just for a look. It was 35° when we got back to camp and still raining. The wet put us into our tents by sundown. Overnight, it cooled a little and dropped 10" of snow, painting the woods with new white clothes. We used our snowshoes to hike out, stopping frequently for photos. There was more traffic along the lake road, but everyone was careful and friendly.

The End GPS Point below is our camp.
