Intermediate Snowshoe - Olallie/Radio Mountain

We ascended beaten trails and abandoned roads up onto the road switchbacking up Olallie Mountain before having lunch and turning back.

  • After several days of heavy snowfall the area was under deep unconsolidated snow.  

Luckily for us, a track had already been beaten into the Hyak Lake and Nordic Pass trails.  However, the abandoned road system beyond, by which we had previously approach Olallie Mountain, was a different story:  we soon found ourselves wallowing in deep snow over scrub trees and blowdown with occasional tree wells.  On return, we found a much more reasonable route on a beaten road passing above Rockdale Lake.  We saw nary another person underway the whole day.
