Trip Report

Intermediate Snowshoe - MTTA High Hut Anderson Lake loop

Nice loop trip for fit snowshoers, though no views of Rainier today. You are unlikely to encounter anyone else on most of this loop.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Enough snow to use snowshoes except for the first half mile or so.  Snowshoers keep to side on groomed path so as not to affect groomed path for skiers (though we saw no skiers today).

Road melted out to lower snow park with vault toilet.

We did a loop up the Anderson Lake road, and discovered a vintage but functional outhouse by Anderson Lake.  Road well signed with distance markers at intervals.  At far end of Anderson Lake, marker guides up to old logging road.  At lake viewpoint at 4160' saddle, we left the designated but ungroomed ski trail and followed the ridge through trees along path of least resistance, taking care to avoid cliffs to left.  Path eventually emerges to more open terrain to continue to High Hut at about 4800', which on a good day has amazing Rainier views.  About 4.5 hours up on the longer and seldom used Anderson Lake approach, and a quick 1.5 hours down on the groomed and shorter trail return.
