Trip Report

Intermediate Alpine Climb - Observation Rock/North Face

3 1/2 wonderful pitches of ice were found today.

  • Road rough but passable
  • Ice in good shape finally.

My 2nd attempt on Ob Rock this year.  On the first trip on Aug 9, we found soft snow and placed pickets the whole way (no screws).  Today we placed screws all the way and didn't use any pickets.  Good ice is found after scraping away the first 2 or 3 inches.

It's about 3 1/2 pitches if you pitch it out from the bottom like we did.

We did the Knapsack Pass trail on the way in and Spray Park trail on the way out.  12 hours roundtrip, including side trips to Spray Falls and Eagle Cliffs viewpoint.
