Howson Peak

We had listed a winter scramble of Howson Peak for 11/29/2014. Because the weather forecast led us to expect hard frozen ground and wet brush and we elected instead to attempt Jolly Mountain from the trail up Salmon la Sac Creek. Jolly, however, was well out of reach and we turned back 500 vertical feet below Sasse Ridge. We gained 2,900’ in 6 ¾ hours and 9 miles. There was 1” of snow at 4,000’ and 1’ of snow at 5,000’.
