Trip Report

Glacier Climb - Snowfield Peak/Neve Glacier

Turned around due to avalanche danger from recent snowfall and warm weather.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Soft, wet snow above 3500 ft.

Our party of six left the Pyramid Lake trailhead at 9:45 a.m. and reached the lake in an hour. Above the lake we encountered continuous snow starting at 3500 ft. and routefinding became challenging. After nearly five hours we reached a large flat area at 5400 ft. below Pyramid Peak. From this vantage point we could see evidence of many recent slides, the most concerning being the debris across our route on the slope below Pinnacle Peak. While we pondered our options we heard and saw several loose wet releases on the other side of the Colonial Glacier. With warmer weather forecast for the next day we decided to camp in the outstanding location and head back down the next day.
