Glacier Climb - Mount Logan/Fremont Glacier

A bit too early season after a substantial snow year.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Some blow downs, snow bridge over expected difficult creek crossing near camp.  Snow line at 4,000'.  A LOT of avy activity in Thunder Creek Basin and along standard route.

Snow line at approximately 4,000'.  Substantial avalanche activity in the Thunder Creek Basin had us adjust our campsite to safer terrain.  Evidence of avalanche activity along standard route led group to try for an alternate route traveling with the SW ridge and above slide debris.  Travel along SW ridge was steady class 2 / class 3 until a cornice and somewhat more technical sub-peak proved to be a barrier, resulting in turn around.

Our group eventually connected with a private party who chose to keep to the traditional route for their summit bid, and learned that they were turned around 200' from the summit because of rotten snow along the route's final scramble to the summit.

Snow is currently consolidated to the point that snowshoes were of minimal use.  Beware mosquitoes.
