Day Hike - West Tiger Mountain 1-2-3

A cool, dry post-Thanksgiving calorie burner through some of the less traveled portions of Tiger Mountain.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The section of Tiger Mountain Trail (TMT) from the West Tiger 3 junction up toward Preston Trail was still peppered with fallen trees and branches from the recent storms. The old bridge near Fred's Corner has some new railing damage and the trail that ran from the bridge to the junction at Fred's corner has become a shallow stream. The route from Tiger 1 to 3 was clear, as well the trail down West Tiger 3.

We started around 9 am from the lower parking lot at the High Point exit (20), which requires no parking pass, and hiked up the short connector to the recently paved, nice new parking area (your Discover Pass dollars at work!). Weather was cool, cloudy, but dry. We started on TMT, hung a left at Fred's Corner to take Preston Trail up toward Tiger 1. It was windy on Tiger 1 and overcast, so we ate lunch in the Hiker's Hut. Then we headed down the road and up to Tiger 2 and then on to Tiger 3. The trek down from Tiger 3 was much less windy and completely clear. There was no snow on any of the route. Total mileage ~9.5-10.0, ~3,000 ft gain, round trip (car to car): 6 hr.
