Trip Report

Day Hike - Talapus & Olallie Lakes

Great trail to a pretty alpine lake.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Wonderful soft forest floor trail. Some blow down easily got around. The trail is muddy in patches where the last of the snow recently melted out. Numerous stream crossings easily crossed, only the last one before the lake gave a newer hiker pause.

Early wildflowers are gone. Now blooming: Wild Ginger, Tiger Lily, Columbine, Twin Flower, Queens Cup and Bunch Berry.

I am not certain of the mileage, 7 - 8 is my guess. We came from the Pratt Lake trail head not the Talapus Lake trail as listed in the club database. We joined the Talapus Lake trail for a short distance and then turned off to Olallie Lake. We gained quite a bit of elevation, but the gain is spread out along the trail with no really steep parts.

This was an after hours conditioning hike, we met at I 90 exit 20 at 4:30 and finished the hike in daylight. Great trip. We had the lake to ourselves for dinner. We only met one other hiker past the turnoff to Granite Mtn.
