Trip Report

Day Hike - Pinnacle Peak/Cal Magnusson Trail

A good workout in the rain on this short, but steep trail.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The trail is good, although muddy and slick in places. Patchy ice on and close to the summit, micro-spikes were helpful but not necessary. No obstacles along the way. Lots of parking along the road, and a clean porta-potty at the trailhead. It wasn't too crowded, but would be quite busy on a sunny day.

We anticipated heavy rain based on the forecast, however we experienced only light rain/drizzle the whole time, no wind, and temps around 50ish. There was enough precip to get wet, but not enough to dampen our spirits! We started our first of two rounds at 10:10 and finished both round trips at 1:30, including brief stops and a nice break in the new lookout tower. As one of us put it, we enjoyed a "great view of the inside of a marshmallow."

This is a good hike that's close to home and gets your heart pumping, especially if you do it twice or more while you're there!
