Day Hike - Mount Aix

Aix marked the spot for views and sunshine.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail has a few downed trees and a few spots on the switchbacks that are eroding, but overall is an extremely well designed trail that gets you efficiently and relatively painlessly to unobstructed views on the ridge.

We snuck in one more day of mostly clear weather before the clouds and probably some snow arrived on this high summit.  Highly recommended as a late summer or early fall hike when it is forecast to be clear and dry.  Evan's eagle (pigeon?) eye caught the faint boot trail that leads directly up to the summit from the main trail, becoming more distinct as it goes.  This direct route has minor scrambling and a little loose rock that should pose no difficulty to most hikers.  The main trail traverses south for a while before doubling back to the summit.  We took the main trail route down, which is recommended if you have time, as it allows varying perspectives of the vast views from this peak.

There was a herd of goats near the summit, and an eagle gliding below us.  A summit register is in place.
