Day Hike - Marmot Pass & Buckhorn Mountain

Excellent hike up Buckhorn Mountain by way of Marmot Pass.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail to the pass is in great shape. The boot path up to Buckhorn is also in good condition. As always, it's a bit scrambly but doable by experienced hikers.

FS 27 is paved most of the way, and FS 2750 is in decent shape with some washboard and a few potholes.  High clearance or SUV's are not needed. This was a great hike despite clouds and fog up top. We had beautiful views of surrounding peaks on the way up to and at the Pass, and nice fall colors. Fog/cloud moved in on the ridge to Buckhorn, but the track was very clear and the ascent was easy. Careful footing needed on the peak. No wind, but it was chilly on the summit. We spent about 45 minutes eating and taking pictures. No one saw bears or goats. A solo young man and another solo man joined us on the summit.  Left cars at 9:00, back to cars at 5:45, 12.8 miles rt, 4,400' gain.

This was a wonderful day with a jovial group of Mountaineers!
