Trip Report

Day Hike - Mailbox Peak

Excellent mid-week trip on this very popular peak!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • I arrived around 7 a.m. and the gate to the upper parking lot was closed. My party members arrived shortly after, and someone came to open the gate around 7:30 so we drove up. The bathrooms were clean and decent. There was no indication in any trip reports I found that the gate doesn't open until a specific time, maybe it's only during mid-week. Otherwise, you can park in the lower lot and walk up to the trailhead.

The old trail heading up was in relatively good shape. Quite a bit of trail work has been done recently to clear several large fallen trees. No snow until near the junction with the new trail, and just patchy. No spikes needed, but need to watch for slick icy spots.  No snow on the boulder field.

Chilly at the start, but we warmed up quickly. No wind in the woods, occasional gusts on the boulder field and at the summit. Had a leisurely summit lunch with great 360 views and pics! Took the new trail down and met several parties heading up. The new trail had more snow stretches, getting sketchy. 5.5 hrs rt travel time, 1.5 stop time, 4000' gain. Overall a great day out with no pressure or time constraints.
