Day Hike - Mailbox Peak

Trails are in good shape and crowded. Hiked with legendary Olympia climber Tom W.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Good weather, cool, calm winds.  All trails lead up, all trails in good shape, clear, and snow free. We kinda scrambled and took a direct route to summit, not the main trails.  4.100 ft, 3 miles, 2 hours, lunch then descended same route.  Not certain if new trail reflects correct mileage as it could be longer than stated.  Many poorly prepared hikers on main trails.  Summit and main trails crowded.  Bunch of dogs and some unleashed.  Overcast at summit with partial views.  The mailbox was full.  Next one up needs to replace the Rainer beer.

WTA site suggested upper lot closed but might only be closed on weekdays.  As we drove in, ~ 8:15 AM, saw many vehicles parked on main roadway before and after entrance turnoff.  Lower lot full.  We found plenty of parking in Upper lot.  Upper lot gate closes at 7 PM. Lots require Discover Pass and not certain if required along roadway near entrance.  Didn't see any place to buy a Pass like Mt Si has the signage for electronic payment but didn't look too hard, have Pass.  Upper lot has two pit toilets.  Both main THs well marked.  Great climb conditioner with water weight.
