Day Hike - Indian Henry's Hunting Ground

An early winter adventure on a beautiful clear day!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The Kautz Creek trail is in good shape, easy crossing of creek on logs and no trees down. Above about 4,200' we encountered snow patches with icy spots. There were a few stretches of water flowing in the trail and mud.  Snow and ice in the trail increased as we got closer to Indian Henry's Hunting Ground, and made for some post-holing in 3 to 4 inches of snow. We had to get around many sheer ice spots by sometimes walking in snow just to the side of the trail, and the meadow was covered with a thin layer of snow over ice, but no trouble walking on it. The wind was not bad, no strong gusts. The wind actually felt warmer at the cabin than lower down and at the parking lot! Moving time 7 hrs/7mins., mileage 11.5 and 3,528' gain according to my gaia gps

We also spotted obvious cougar tracks in the snow, and what appeared to be fox tracks closer to the cabin. Overall a very enjoyable day with great companions!
