Day Hike - Greenwater Lakes

Conditioning Hiking Series hike to Greenwater Lakes was a success! Portions of the trail were snow-covered, but the trail was easy to follow.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • At the trailhead, there are still piles of snow from earlier plowing, but the parking lot is clear.  About half of the trail is still snow-covered, with some icy spots. The trail to the lake is easy to follow, and the snow patches gave us a good opportunity to practice using trekking poles when crossing snow. The two new log bridges were nearly snow-free and easy to cross. We had a good hike to the lake and stopped just past the log bridge near the inlet, at the far end of the lake. This last bridge still had snow and ice at one end and was a little tricky.  The trail beyond the bridge, to Echo and Lost Lakes, is still snow covered with icy sections, so we opted to stop at the bridge.

Our conditioning Hiking Series group of 10 met at the Greeenwater trailhead at 8:30 a.m. The road is paved the whole way, and while there are still piles of snow around the parking lot, the lot is clear for cars. About half of the trail is still snow-covered, with some icy spots.  The group did well and the snow gave us a good chance to practice using trekking poles for extra stability. We  had a good hike to the lake and went to the log bridge just beyond the lake. This last bridge still has snow and ice at one end, so was challenging to cross. The trail beyond the bridge, to Echo and Lost Lakes, is still snow covered, so we opted to stop at the bridge.

After a break along the river, we hiked back to the trailhead. Most members of the group opted to use micro spikes for the first third of the way back to the trailhead. Roundtrip was about 4 miles, and with our break, took about three hours.
