Trip Report

Cross-country Ski - Erling Stordahl

Adventure trip in early season conditions.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Due to low snow conditions there has been limited grooming.  There are several bare spots with water over the trail.  The spur connecting to the C2P is not groomed or separated from snow mobile traffic.

Grooming has been erratic so far this season, so we were relieved to read that Erling Stordahl trails had been groomed this morning.  The goal of this trip was to have fun while practicing on easy terrain so we planned to ski all of the easy trails with set track.  We started by heading towards the Meadow and Forest Loops.  The Meadow Loop was not groomed, so we skipped it and did the Forest Loop twice.  By the second lap, everyone was getting  comfortable with their skis!  Next we headed to the Troll Bridge trail.  It was a bit of an adventure, with several water crossings.  We discussed turning around, but the group preferred to give it a go.  Some managed with skis on and others walked this section.  Next we headed down the Roller Coaster, planning to go as far as the groomed track.  Unfortunately, that was not far and we turned around at the first wide bare spot (with no grooming on the other side).  Next we headed our towards the P2C. The spur trail is shared with snow mobiles and typically groomed with a berm and signs separating skiers and machines.  But today it was one big bumpy and unpleasant mess.  We went about halfway before deciding to turn around and head back to the parking lot.  We ended up skiing about 4 miles.  Every one had a good time and practiced some skills.
