Party of 4 including two basic students departed Dash Point Pier Park at 10:15 AM June 14, 2014. Weather was very mild and forecast was generally for conditions to be mild throughout the day...and they were. The intended destination was up the Hylebos Waterway as far as the berth of the MV Kalakala. The pace of the paddle was much slower than expected so it was decided to cut the route short at the entrance to the waterway to give us enough time to practice solo and assisted recoveries on the way back.
Practice recoveries were done in the bay just to the north of Brown's Point, an excellent area clear of motorized boat traffic. Both students experienced difficulties executing the recoveries to the degree that the instructor did not sign off this portion of their trip. They both need much more practice. They are both highly motivated and did not give up, and tried very hard. With more practice they will do well, but at this juncture it was a "NO-PASS" situation.
The trip back to the beach was uneventful in excellent conditions.
