CHS 1 Hike - Summerland & Panhandle Gap

CHS1 hike on August 3, 2019 with 12 participants

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail is in very good condition to within a quarter mile of Panhandle Gap.  There are currently three patches of snow, from about 20 to 50 feet long in this section of trail.  The last patch near the Gap, while the shortest, is the steepest and has the most ice.  In fact it may be icier than it was 8 days ago when I also did the hike.  Of the 12 in the group, a third of the group used micro-spikes on the ascent over this patch, while half the group chose to use microspikes on the descent.

Wildflowers are still in bloom although starting to fade.  The day was warm and sunny and marmots were seen at Summerland, above Summerland towards the Gap, and at Panhandle Gap itself.  Goats were seen above one of the cirque lakes above Summerland.
