Trip Report

Basic Snowshoe - Paradise (Mount Rainier)

Gorgeous snowshoe trek to Glacier Vista at Mt. Rainier!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • 16 degrees at Paradise at 11:00 a.m., but bright sunshine quickly made us too warm within 5 minutes of snowshoeing.  Wonderful powder snow, but the route was easy to follow most of the way.  We would sink in almost up to our knees out of the track, even with snowshoes.  We observed several small snow sloughs in the area below Panorama Point, some triggered by skiers.

Very cold, but no wind at all and a blue sky called for extra sunscreen.  The road to Longmire and up to Paradise was somewhat slick, but doable with AWD and winter tires.  Gate opened at 10:00 a.m.  The Park did not require actually using chains.  This was a relatively short trip, but well worth the effort given the perfect weather and views!  A great group, we had a fantastic time!
