Shuksan Summit block 7-8-2022.jpg

Trip Report

Basic Glacier Climb - Mount Shuksan/Sulphide Glacier

Summit block was covered in snow and shrouded in fog preventing a summit bid. In better weather it may have been possible to ascend the summit block using either running belay, fixed lines with pickets or even belayed climbing but with visibility so low trip leadership determined the difficulty exceeded basic alpine climbing.

  • Road rough but passable
  • Snow from about 4,500 ft. on.  Summit block can only be ascended by steep snow scramble with very condition-dependent footing.  Never seen the summit block this snowy in July before.  Caught our party by surprise.

Low ground clearance vehicles may scrape 2-4 times.  Mine did.

Walk up-permit required going to Marblemount the day before the trip.  An 80 mile detour.

Meteoblue and National Weather Service forecasts called for cloudy skies with clouds down at the 8-10,000 foot level which I now know (seen this 3 times now) the summit block will be shrouded in clouds.  Not a del breaker but means summit block conditions must be evaluated carefully.
