Trip Report

Basic Glacier Climb - Little Tahoma/East Shoulder

Water flowing south of high camp at 7,600 feet. No crevasse hazard to speak of. Rockfall hazard from the cliffs above the upper Whitman glacier. Loose scree in the exit gulley at 10,800 feet must be avoided, as it could slide onto the glacier.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Keep alert for rockfall from the cliffs above the upper Whitman glacier.  Stay off of the loose scree at the base of the exit gulley at 10,800 feet.  The whole scree slope could slide onto the glacier.  On our trip there was no crevasse hazard to speak of.

Got permit for the high camp at 7,600 feet when the ranger station opened the day before our climb.  Saw a bear cub at Summerland.  Water flowing  about 200 yards south of high camp.  Left high camp at 2:00 a.m.  Party of 11.  Back to high camp by around 3:00 and back at cars around 7:00 p.m.  10 people topped out.  Slow process.  Party size of 6 or 9 probably better for this trip.
