Amabilis Mountain

Love Amabilis! Difficult but with a scenic payoff at the summit.

  • The snow was icy, hard, and covered with pine needles and cones under the trees. The snow had formed large bowls around each tree, creating an eggshell carton-like surface in the forest, cupping each tree. Snow falling from the trees had pitted the snow in rings.

At the 2 mile mark on the Nordic ski trail named "The Road" we began bushwhacking uphill on Amabilis Mountain, twice cutting switchbacks and crossing over the ski trail. As snowshoers it behooved us to stay off the groomed part of the trail.

We were fortunate with the weather; after an initially overcast day, we enjoyed some sunshine as we ascended Amabilis Mountain. We basked in sunshine and more powdery, less icy snow at the higher elevations before retracing our footsteps.
