Alpine Scramble - Vesper Peak

We had a very pleasant Monday on Vesper with good views and no crowds. The scramble was a little more challenging than usual due to a few inches of snow on the rock for about the last 200 veritical feet.

  • Road rough but passable
  • Water levels in the streams were low, so the crossings were fairly easy with poles; although the morning was chilly, there was no ice on the rocks we used to cross.

Every time I hike to Headlee Pass the trail gets rootier and rockier; this part of the trip is more tedious than it used to be.   In one of the places where the trail goes through some rocky debris, we went too far to the right,  where there were some cairns that led us further astray.

7 scramblers had a very pleasant trip on Vesper Peak on Monday, 9/30/2019.  The original plan had been to do a peak in larch country north of Rainy Pass, but there was likely to be too much snow for safe scrambling there.   On Vesper, there were a few inches of snow on the upper part of the scramble which required a little extra care.  Views were quite good, although somewhat limited by clouds.  We saw only 2 solo hikers on the trip, and had the summit to ourselves.  The summit register was full and needs to be replaced.
