Some trees are down across the trail; some could be stepped over but a couple of them required some effort to get around. Snow was in good shape for kicking steps, plunge stepping and glissading; this is unlikely to be the case during the subsequent days of hot weather. There were a few patches of hard steep snow across the trail that needed some care to cross safely. Although there was quite a bit more snow than usual for this time of year, the rocky section at the top was snow-free.
After so much cool damp weather, this day was just about perfect; sunny, but not too hot. Views extended south to Mt. Hood and north to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness; Glacier Peak was briefly visible before distant clouds obscured it. The 5 students on the trip all did well both on snow and on rock.
