Alpine Scramble - Tahtlum Peak

Enjoyed a great day with a group of Tacoma Mountaineers. Stormy conditions let us appreciate the occasional blue sky, sun breaks all the more.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • 2 ft of snow on North Facing slope of Tahtlum above 6000'  Ridge mostly snow free. Minimal patches of snow on approach.

Blustery day. Not as wet as predicted. 10 mph plus wind from the South, occasional gusts of 25 mph above 6000 ft. Found route  on  west ridge mostly snow free. Went to the North of first bump and over the second .4 mile after leaving PCT heading east. Returned on the South side, an easier route. Visibility changing through out the day. Enjoyed some spectacular  views for a lot of the day, even a partial view of Rainier. Left the car at 9:30, Summit at 12:15, back to the car by 2:45. Had lunch and a few short breaks on the decent. A great day to be in the Mountains. A successful trip  for my first trip as a scramble Leader, with a great group of Mountaineers.
