Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Rock Thunder Peak

Enjoyable scramble of a peak which is not done often.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The snow lake trail was snow free or snow patches to the pass, after that it was solid snow. The route was snow covered until about 100 feet below the saddle between Rock Thunder and Snoqualmie Mtn. After that just a few snow patches on the ridge.

A very nice day, hiked the snow lake trail to the saddle and then dropped on the snow to the lake. Then rocked hopped the stream and followed it up passed three tarns which were starting to melt out. Then climbed up the snow toward the saddle, about 60 feet below the saddle it became a scramble on mossy rock and duff. From the saddle we followed the ridge, either scrambling over or around the various rock outcrops and brush on the ridge to the final rock scramble of the summit block. This summit has great views of the various mountains around it. After about a 45 min break we head back down the ridge a choose to drop off at about the 5000, instead of returning to the saddle. Here are a few pictures.
