Alpine Scramble - Mount Skookum & Jolly Mountain

With unfriendly weather in the forecast, the goal was changed from Central Cowlitz Chimney to Skookum, on the divide between the Cle Elum and Teanaway river valleys

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Roads and trails were in good shape.

Thinking the weather might be better we approached Skookum from the east.   We gained 4,000’ of elevation in 11 hours of travel.  We hiked the DeRoux Creek Trail, the DeRoux Spur Trail and then the Middle Fork Teanaway trail to the pass between DeRoux Peak (Pt. 6260) and Pt. 6084.  From here we followed a boot path along the ridge south, which avoided obstacles by dropping west of the ridge line.  At the 6,000-foot col between Mount Skookum and Point 6084, we made a sidehilling traverse southeast across brushy slopes into the basin to the northeast of Skookum, then ascended the  heather slope to the summit.  There are reports that others have followed the ridgeline directly to the summit
